Imbolc is celebrated on the 2nd of February. It marks the beginning of Spring and is half way between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is also know as Candlemas or St Brigid's Day. In the past Corn Dollies were made by the unmarried women of the household to represent Brigid. The women would stay awake all night before the young men of the village would visit. They had to ask permission to enter and had to treat the women and the dollies with respect. The next day the women would carry the dollies through their village from house to house.Bonfires and candles are lit to mark the day.
